Airbus x JAL Launch First-Ever Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Idea Contest for University Students and More

Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. (hereinafter "JAL") and Airbus are jointly launching the idea contest "SAF Idea Challenge 2026" as part of their efforts to advance the social implementation of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in Japan. This contest calls for innovative ideas from university, graduate, and technical college students nationwide to address challenges in promoting the widespread adoption of SAF. By envisioning a future where SAF becomes widely accepted across society together with the next generation of talent, JAL and Airbus aim to accelerate decarbonization in aviation.

The social implementation of SAF requires collaboration not only within the aviation industry but also across sectors with diverse stakeholders. To ensure a multidimensional evaluation of SAF-related challenges and solutions, the judging panel will include not only JAL and Airbus but also partner companies.

Airbus has previously conducted similar initiatives worldwide, creating platforms where diverse stakeholders unite to tackle decarbonization. JAL and Airbus will continue to lead decarbonization efforts in the aviation industry while empowering the next generation to take a new step toward transforming the planet’s tomorrow through sustainable initiatives.

Awards

1st Prize: Study tour to France (including factory tour at Airbus headquarters) – Schedule to be coordinated for May 2027 or later

2nd Prize: iPad Air

3rd Prize: AirPods Max2

Eligibility

Students currently enrolled in universities, graduate schools, or technical colleges in Japan (※)

※ University and graduate students: All years, faculties, and master’s/doctoral programs are eligible.

※ Technical college students: Must be in their fourth year of undergraduate studies or enrolled in an advanced course.

Applicants must be able to attend the final selection event scheduled to be held at JAL’s headquarters.

Applications are accepted individually or in teams of up to five members (including teams composed of students from different universities or graduate schools).
